About SLM Spud Farms

SLM Spud Farms is a family-owned and operated agricultural producer located in Grassy Lake, Alberta. We're a diverse operation specializing in row crops ??? including potatoes and corn ??? and a robust livestock program featuring beef cattle, poultry, and swine, all supported by our on-site feedmill. Built on a Christian background, our company values integrity, stewardship, and a strong work ethic.

We don't just farm; we innovate. SLM manufactures custom equipment and systems in-house to increase efficiency and production. Our design philosophy is simple: KISS ??? Keep It Simple, Stupid. We value designs that are effective, durable, and easy to maintain in a real-world environment.

The Role

We're looking for a full-time Design Engineer / Draftsman to work directly with our lead design team to bring "simple but smart" agricultural solutions to life. In this collaborative role, you'll help bridge the gap between a good idea and a finished product. This role is well suited for someone who takes initiative, communicates clearly, and enjoys solving complex design challenges in a hands-on, production-focused environment.

What You'll Do

  • Direct Collaboration: Work alongside our team to translate project goals and verbal instructions into practical, buildable designs.
  • Repair and Retrofit: Use drafting and design skills to troubleshoot, fix, or improve existing equipment and systems that have broken or reached their limit.
  • Practical Drafting: Create high-quality designs that prioritize simplicity and efficiency in line with our KISS philosophy.
  • Iterative Design: Revise and update drawings based on project changes, team feedback, or shop-floor construction constraints.
  • Documentation: Organize and maintain all design files, parts lists, and professional drawing packages.

What We're Looking For

  • Software: Minimum 1 year of SolidWorks experience preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in drafting with a strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Mindset: Detail-oriented professional who can work independently but thrives in a collaborative, peer-to-peer environment.
  • Location: This is an in-person position at our Grassy Lake, AB operation.

What You Get

  • Family Centered: A family-run business that values a supportive work-life balance.
  • Negotiable Wage: Based on your specific experience and skill level.
  • Health Benefits: Comprehensive package for you and your family.
  • Housing: Local housing is available if needed.
  • Casual Dress: Farm and shop appropriate.
  • Down-to-Earth Culture: Company events and a supportive, Christian-based team environment.
